Located at the eastern gate of The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, The Dalles serves as a center of commerce for a five county area that includes Wasco, Hood, and Sherman counties of Oregon and Skamania and Klickitat counties in Washington State.

The Dalles Area provides added services to the 73,000+ residents as well as provides tourism services to the thousands who come into the Columbia River Gorge each year.

The historic downtown currently boasts an extensive renaissance program which features a variety of projects sponsored by both public and non-profit dollars with the objective of recapturing the historic past of the area and building a healthy economic community for residents and visitors alike. Currently there are 21 projects on the books that total an investment of over $75,000,000. These projects are divided into the following:
